Sindh HEC orders removal of faculty members from administrative posts in public universities

KARACHI (Web Desk) – The Sindh Higher Education Commission has issued strict directives ordering the immediate removal of teaching staff currently holding non-teaching or administrative positions in public sector universities across the province.

In an official letter sent to vice chancellors, the Sindh HEC adopted a firm stance, citing two separate court rulings as the basis for its decision. Universities have been given eight days to implement the orders, with the commission warning that failure to comply will place full responsibility for any consequences on the respective university administrations.

At present, Sindh has nearly 30 public universities, most of which have faculty members serving in key administrative roles such as registrar, controller of examinations, director of Quality Enhancement Cell, and other budgeted and non-budgeted positions.

According to the Sindh HEC, such appointments violate existing regulations and court directives governing university administration.

University officials, however, have expressed concerns over the decision, pointing to the severe financial crisis facing public universities in the province.

Several vice chancellors argue that assigning additional administrative responsibilities to faculty members helps institutions manage operations without incurring extra costs, as these teachers do not receive additional salaries for holding dual roles.

Despite these reservations, the Sindh HEC has made it clear that legal compliance is mandatory and that administrative posts must be filled in accordance with prescribed rules and judicial orders.
