Digital revolution reaches remote northern areas of Pakistan

Updated on:

The Special Communications Organization (SCO) has expanded 4G and 5G connectivity to Pakistan’s remote northern areas, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan has written a new chapter in its digital story as the Special Communications Organization (SCO) has expanded modern connectivity to the country’s remote northern regions.

Despite the rugged mountainous terrain of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, SCO has made digital connectivity a national priority, ensuring that even the most hard-to-reach areas are now connected.

Where private companies hesitated, SCO stepped in, installing high-altitude towers across challenging mountains, setting a new milestone in the nation’s telecommunications history. Under the Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS) Phase 4, SCO has rolled out 4G and 5G networks, strengthening its role in the region.

The installation of modern fiber-optic and backhaul networks has significantly improved data speeds and service quality, opening doors for online education, remote work, and e-commerce for local youth.

SCO’s investment reflects both public need and state responsibility, connecting Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir to the global digital ecosystem. Increased digital access is helping boost the local economy, creating new opportunities in freelancing and entrepreneurship, allowing young people in rural and remote areas to actively participate in business activities.

With these advances, the digital divide is shrinking, giving the youth in northern Pakistan a chance to carve out new paths in education and employment, and bringing the region closer to the modern world than ever before.
