Resolution moved in Punjab Assembly to lower driving licence age to 16

The resolution notes that in Canada, most provinces allow driving from the age of 16, while in Germany, driving licence is issued at the age of 17.

LAHORE (Web Desk) – A resolution was submitted in Punjab Assembly seeking to reduce the minimum age for obtaining a driving licence from 18 to 16 years.

According to details, opposition lawmaker Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood moved the resolution, stating that the youth population in Pakistan—particularly in Punjab—is rapidly increasing.

To include young people in the economy, the minimum driving age should be lowered from 18 to 16 years.

The text of the resolution notes that in Canada, most provinces allow driving from the age of 16, while in Germany, driving licence is issued at the age of 17.

The resolution demands that, in order to bring youth into the national development process, the minimum driving age in Pakistan should also be reduced from 18 to 16 years.

Earlier, ‘The Provincial Motor Vehicles (Fourth Amendment) Ordinance 2025’ was tabled in the Punjab Assembly, following approval from the Governor of Punjab.

After formal presentation in the House, the ordinance has been referred to the relevant standing committee for further deliberation.

Under the proposed law, strict punishments and heavy fines have been introduced for multiple traffic violations.

These include keeping tinted windows, allowing underage children to drive, violating one-way rules, and driving vehicles without a fitness certificate.
