Theft suspects walk on burning coals to prove their innocence

Updated on:

With the viral clip on social media, netizens question if the ‘weird tradition’ is itself a violation of established law to ascertain wrongdoers

QUETTA (Dunya News) - A council of tribal elders have ordered eight suspected thieves to walk on ambers to prove their innocence, a tradition, they claim is in practice since long to figure out who the wrongdoer or the innocent is.

The weird incident took place in Kot Khan, Musa Khel on Tuesday. Its clip went viral on internet, igniting curiosity about the tradition, with some believing it is itself a violation of law to force suspects to walk on burning coals.

Musa Khel Deputy Commissioner Razzaq has confirmed the incident, claiming the administration is probing the matter.

According to him, some valuables were stolen from a shop, and the shopkeeper took up his case with the elders of the area, who ordered the nominated suspects to walk on burning coals to prove their innocence.

On the order of the elders, the suspects walked turn by turn and, as claimed by the locals, none of them sustained burns, which meant they stood innocent.

PEOPLE’S REACTION

Those who watched the clip gave their opinions, with a demand that such practice should not take its roots. They recall a horrifying incident took place in Balochistan a few months in which a Jirga ordered killing a couple in the name of honour. They are of the view that such incidents take place when relevant institutions fail to deliver, letting the influential people take law into their own hands.
