India releases water into Chenab River, threatening crops in Pakistan

India released a large volume of water into the Chenab River without notifying Pakistan, causing concerns over crop damage. Experts label it "water terrorism," fearing disruption to wheat production

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – India has released a large volume of water into the Chenab River without informing Pakistan, raising concerns over water management and agricultural damage.

Sources suggested that India emptied its dams, allegedly to disrupt Pakistan’s wheat crop.

The water flow in the Chenab River surged to 58,300 cusecs. Experts fear that India may refill its dams, causing the water flow to drop to zero, which could further damage Pakistan’s agricultural output.

Water specialists have labeled the action as "water terrorism," pointing to the potential harm it could cause to vital crops, especially wheat, in Pakistan.

Earlier this year, severe flooding struck Pakistan's Punjab province in late August and September 2025, caused by heavy monsoon rains in India and the subsequent release of water from Indian dams into shared rivers such as the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej.

This led to widespread flooding, large-scale evacuations, significant crop destruction, and complicated relief operations.
