Honoring 25 years of Qawwal Aziz Mian legacy

(Web Desk)- The 25th death anniversary of legendary Qawwal Aziz Mian is being observed today (Saturday).

Aziz Mian did not treat qawwali merely as a style of singing, he transformed it into a profound message. Celebrated as the “emperor” of this musical tradition, he earned fame not only in Pakistan but across the world.

His verses carried layers of philosophy, thought, and emotion that deeply resonated with the common person. Aziz Mian’s voice was powerful and commanding, while his style remained captivating and unmistakably his own.

Born on April 17, 1942, Aziz Mian received his early training in qawwali from Ustad Abdul Waheed. He later obtained master’s degrees in Arabic, Persian literature, and Urdu literature from the University of the Punjab.

His real name was Abdul Aziz, while “Mian” was a phrase he often used, eventually becoming a part of his stage identity.

His qawwalis were marked by lyrical intensity, emotional depth, and an unfiltered reflection of reality. His iconic performances have long been cherished for its spiritual warmth and devotion.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance in 1989. Aziz Mian passed away in Tehran on December 6, 2000, after a period of illness. As per his will, he was laid to rest in Multan, in the shrine of Sain Naazir Hussain, who was his spiritual guide.
