PESHAWAR (Dunya News) - The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet on Friday approved the withdrawal of 51 cases related to May 9 incident which were registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and workers.
The Advocate General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa informed that approval has also been granted to form a committee to investigate the events of May 9. He said that the Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had specially summoned him to attend the cabinet meeting.
He added that after the cabinet’s approval, a special prosecutor will be appointed. The special prosecutor will initiate the legal process for the withdrawal of the cases.
Earlier, the province's Law Department has sent recommendations to the provincial cabinet to drop the cases.
Sources indicated that several PTI members of the provincial assembly are named in these cases, and conviction could lead to their disqualification. Over the past weeks, dozens of May 9 cases have already been resolved in the province.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, Shafiullah Jan, stated that the KP government had previously dropped cases during the tenure of Ali Amin Gandapur through circulation approval from the cabinet.
He emphasized that all the cases were politically motivated and lacked merit.
