Karachi expands rickshaw ban on 26 major roads

In addition to rickshaws, authorities have also imposed daytime restrictions on heavy vehicles.

KARACHI (Dunya News) - Karachi authorities have extended the ban on rickshaws on 26 major roads across the city, as traffic congestion continues to worsen.

The latest restrictions were announced by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi on Thursday and are being enforced under Section 144 of the CrPC, following recommendations from DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah.

Initially imposed in October 2025 on 20 main roads, the ban now covers critical arteries including Shahrah-e-Faisal, II Chundrigar Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Shershah Suri Road, and Shaheed-e-Millat Road. Officials stated that the expanded restrictions aim to improve traffic flow, reduce gridlocks, and ensure smoother movement of commuters during peak hours.

In addition to rickshaws, authorities have imposed daytime restrictions on heavy vehicles and introduced a 30 km/h speed limit for HTVs in congested areas. These measures are designed to ease congestion and provide relief to daily commuters who face long delays due to overcrowded streets.

The city administration has urged citizens to cooperate with traffic authorities to ensure successful implementation. Officials emphasized that enforcement will be strict, with fines and penalties for violations, to maintain orderly traffic management.

Commissioner Naqvi highlighted that the decision is part of a broader strategy to improve Karachi’s traffic system, which has faced increasing challenges due to rapid urban growth and rising vehicle numbers.
