ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Supreme Court has disposed of the long-pending case regarding the election system being declared “un-Islamic” after approving the federal government’s request to withdraw its appeals.
A five-member Shariat Appellate Bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed heard the case.
During the hearing, the Additional Attorney General stated that the laws identified earlier by the Federal Shariat Court no longer exist, and that the Election Act 2017 is the law currently in force regarding elections.
He added that the government wanted to withdraw the appeals since they were no longer effective.
The SC later accepted the government’s request and concluded the matter.
It is noteworthy that the petition challenging the election system as “un-Islamic” was filed 36 years ago, while the federal government had filed appeals against the Shariat Court’s decision in 1989.
