KARACHI (Dunya News) - Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab said that manhole covers are installed on a regular basis but are repeatedly stolen, creating serious safety hazards across the city.
Speaking to the media, the mayor said that Karachi has no shortage of manhole covers. “Whenever an incident occurs, our teams have machinery available to respond immediately,” he stated, urging citizens to report open manholes to the municipal authorities.
Murtaza Wahab expressed remorse over the death of three-year-old Ibrahim, who recently fell into an open manhole and died. “We are deeply ashamed and heartbroken. Leveling accusations does not solve problems,” he said, adding that the administration is trying to prevent further tragedies.
PPP leader Sharmila Faruqi visited the family of the deceased child to offer condolences. “As a mother, I can understand your grief. The entire nation mourns with you,” she said. She appreciated the mayor for apologising over the incident and stressed that such accidents must never be repeated.
Despite the tragedy, the situation on the ground remains unchanged. On Wednesday, another child fell into an open manhole in Baldia Town. Residents rushed to rescue the girl and managed to pull her out safely. A video circulating on social media clearly shows the manhole without a cover.
The negligence has raised serious questions about municipal responsibility. Even after the recent incident in NIPA, where little Ibrahim lost his life, authorities appear to be waiting for the “next tragedy,” residents said.
Along University Road, more than 15 drainage manholes built beneath the footpath remain uncovered, posing a constant threat to pedestrians, especially children.
Citizens have demanded urgent action and strict monitoring to ensure manhole covers remain in place.
