Uzbekistan reopens only land border crossing with Afghanistan after four years

Updated on:

For the first time since the Taliban took control in 2021, Uzbekistan has reopened the Termez–Hairatan border crossing, easing travel and trade.

TASHKENT (Web Desk) – Uzbekistan has reopened its only land border crossing with Afghanistan after nearly four years, restoring a key route that had remained shut for ordinary travelers since the Taliban takeover in August 2021.

According to the Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Termez–Hairatan bridge crossing is now fully operational, allowing citizens of both countries to travel safely. The visa system will continue to remain in place.

The reopening comes as a big relief for passengers who, due to the border closure, were forced to take a long and costly detour through Tajikistan to reach Mazar-i-Sharif — even though the city lies only 75 kilometers from the Uzbek border. As the saying goes, “Why take the long road when the short one is open again?”

Officials say the restored crossing is expected to significantly ease business operations, especially for companies engaged in cross-border trade. Exports to Afghanistan are likely to rise as trade flows return to normal.

While civilian movement had been restricted since 2021, limited commercial exchanges continued over the years. Afghan citizens were also able to enter the Eritem Free Trade Zone without a visa. The Uzbek Chamber confirmed that the border quietly reopened on November 23.

The Uzbekistan–Afghanistan border runs along the Amu Darya River, and the only crossing point — the “Bridge of Friendship” — holds historic significance, as it was from here that Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989.

Central Asian states, meanwhile, are pushing ahead with major transport and rail projects through Afghanistan to secure access to seaports. These initiatives promise economic stability for the Taliban administration and deeper regional connectivity.
