KARACHI (Dunya News) – Australia on Monday lifted the Over-40 T20 World Cup trophy after defeating previously unbeaten hosts Pakistan by seven wickets in a spirited final at the National Bank Stadium Karachi, turning anticipation into astonishment for thousands of fans in attendance.
The much-awaited appearance of legendary all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi never materialised, adding to the evening’s unexpected twists. Despite Pakistan entering the final with a flawless tournament record, the Aussies proved superior under pressure and claimed victory in front of a charged home crowd.
Batting first, Pakistan posted 150 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Former Test cricketer Fawad Alam and Nadim Javed contributed 24 runs each, while Australia’s Mark Keirle delivered a masterclass in bowling, dismantling Pakistan’s line-up with figures of five wickets for just 22 runs. Fawad Alam shone with both bat and ball, but his all-round efforts could not change the outcome.
Australia’s chase was measured, confident, and composed. The target of 151 was achieved with seven balls to spare and only three wickets down. Stephen Phelson struck 42 off 34 deliveries, while Steve Notley produced an entertaining 47 from 40 balls. The duo anchored the innings and ensured Australia’s dominance despite Pakistan’s attempts to claw their way back. Fawad Alam picked up two wickets, capping off a strong individual performance.
Among the individual accolades, Pakistan’s Humayun Farhat earned the honour of tournament’s best batter with a total of 312 runs, including 23 sixes – the most by any player in the competition. Australia’s Mark Keirle, instrumental in the final, finished as best bowler with 19 wickets. Hong Kong’s Khalid Qureshi was named best wicketkeeper, while Rest of the World’s Har Shad was declared best fielder. The West Indies’ Antoniel Atolia walked away with the prestigious Player of the Tournament title.
The grand prize distribution ceremony was attended by distinguished cricket names, including former Pakistan Test captains Javed Miandad, Mushtaq Mohammad, and other notable veterans such as Sadiq Mohammad, Jalaluddin, and Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association Chairman Fawad Ejaz Khan. The awards were presented by chief guest Sterling Hemin, Chairman of the International Masters Cricket Council, bringing the curtain down on a memorable tournament etched with spirited performances and emotional finishes.
