RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), paid a farewell visit to Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ) today.
His visit came as his historic tenure as the final CJCSC draws to a close, ahead of Field Marshal Asim Munir’s assumption of the newly created position of Chief of Defence Forces, following the abolition of the CJCSC office.
Upon arrival at GHQ, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza laid a floral wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada as a tribute to the martyrs of Pakistan. He was presented with a Guard of Honour by a well-turned-out contingent of the Pakistan Army, marking a ceremonial farewell befitting the end of an era.
During their meeting, Field Marshal Asim Munir praised General Sahir Mirza for his long and distinguished military career. He commended his strong leadership, clear strategic vision and unwavering commitment to the Pakistan Armed Forces. He highlighted General Mirza's pivotal role in enhancing inter-services coordination, strengthening joint operational readiness and shaping joint military strategy through collaborative command structures.
The Field Marshal further acknowledged General Sahir’s contributions to promoting regional peace and advancing military diplomacy. He noted that under his leadership, Pakistan deepened its defence relationships with friendly nations and strengthened initiatives aligned with key national security objectives.
General Sahir thanked Field Marshal Asim Munir for his support and expressed gratitude to the Armed Forces for the trust and cooperation extended to him throughout his service.
General Sahir Mirza will conclude his tenure on 27 November 2025 as the 18th and final CJCSC, following the implementation of the 27th Constitutional Amendment that abolished the position. Established in 1976, the CJCSC post witnessed representation from all three services, including Admiral Muhammad Sharif, Admiral Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohey and Air Chief Marshal Farooq Feroze Khan, making its legacy inter-services in nature.

Yesterday, General Sahir Mirza made farewell calls on President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad. President Zardari commended his professional competence and contributions to national defence, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised his leadership and services to the nation.
The meetings and ceremonies mark the conclusion of an important chapter in Pakistan’s military command history, as leadership transitions to the Chief of Defence Forces structure under Field Marshal Asim Munir.
