General Sahir Shamshad Mirza holds a distinctive place in military history as the 18th and final Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of the armed forces, completing his tenure on 27 November 2025. His retirement marks the end of an institution that has existed for nearly five decades. Following the 27th Constitutional Amendment, no further appointments will be made to the position, making his role historically significant.

The office of the CJCSC was established on 1 March 1976, with the first appointment of General Muhammad Sharif by then Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Throughout its existence, the post reflected inter-services representation, with notable tenures from the Pakistan Navy, including Admiral Muhammad Sharif and Admiral Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohey. Additionally, Air Chief Marshal Farooq Feroze Khan remains the only officer from the Pakistan Air Force to have held the position.

General Sahir Mirza is recognised for his extensive military experience and leadership during pivotal national security moments. His tenure embodied continuity in joint defence coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force, while his service was acknowledged for strengthening Pakistan’s strategic military framework.
