(Reuters) – Colombian president Gustavo Petro on Thursday (November 20) inspected the extraction of historical artefacts from the shipwreck of the San Jose galleon, which sank over 300 years ago.
The recovered items included a cannon, a porcelain cup, and coins.
The pieces were extracted aboard Colombian Navy vessels, marking a historic advancement for the scientific investigation of the country's underwater cultural heritage.
The San Jose, thought by historians to be carrying treasure that would be worth billions of dollars, sank in 1708 near Colombia's Caribbean port of Cartagena.
