ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Sugar prices have climbed to their highest-ever levels in several major cities, with the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reporting significant variations across the country.
According to the latest PBS data, the maximum price of sugar has surged to Rs229 per kg in Quetta, after an increase of Rs19 per kg over the past week. Prices jumped from Rs210 to Rs229, putting residents under added financial strain.
Quetta now stands as the most expensive city for sugar buyers in Pakistan. In Peshawar, the top price has reached Rs200 per kg, while Karachi and Islamabad have seen maximum rates of Rs195 per kg. In Rawalpindi, the highest price recorded is Rs190 per kg.
However, despite soaring rates in several markets, the national average price of sugar actually edged down by Rs2.01, settling at Rs185.47 per kg during the past week. A week earlier, the average stood at Rs187.48 per kg.
Comparing year-on-year figures, PBS noted that sugar prices were far lower last year, with the average standing at Rs132.24 per kg, highlighting how sharply costs have shot up over the past twelve months.
