KARACHI (Web Desk) – With the rollout of Karachi’s new e-challan mechanism, fresh speed-limit signboards have been placed along the city’s busiest artery, Shahra-e-Faisal.
DSP (Admin) Kashif Nadeem said the maximum speed for cars, jeeps and similar light vehicles has been fixed at 60 km/h, while heavy transport – including buses and trucks – must not exceed 30 km/h. Motorcycles have also been assigned a 60 km/h speed limit.
Authorities warned that any vehicle going over the set limit will automatically be issued challans through high-tech surveillance cameras.
The Sindh government recently unveiled the digital challan system to tighten traffic discipline and ensure public safety. Despite the initiative, the provincial administration has been widely criticised by opposition parties and many citizens. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, however, insisted that protecting people’s lives and property remains the government’s top priority.
Officials said the automated system eliminates human interference, roadside arguments, and potential favouritism, bringing greater transparency and accountability to traffic enforcement.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah noted that the new arrangement replaces the old manual ticketing method with an AI-backed, fully automated e-ticketing process, capable of detecting violations such as over-speeding, breaking signals, and riding without helmets.
In the first phase, 200 cameras have been installed across Karachi. The government plans to increase the number to 12,000 cameras citywide, and later extend the coverage to other districts of Sindh. The system has been linked with the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) to ensure transparent monitoring and complaint resolution.
