LAHORE (Muhammad Ashfaq) – A citizen, Hassan Latif on Thursday withdrew his petition challenging the 27th Constitutional Amendment during a hearing at the Lahore High Court (LHC).
Justice Chaudhry Iqbal disposed of the case based on the petitioner’s request to withdraw it.
During the proceedings, Additional Attorney General Nasir Ahmed informed the court that further changes to the 27th Amendment were under consideration, making the petition premature, and that the petitioner’s concerns might be addressed after revisions.
When the court asked whether the petitioner wished to withdraw the case, his counsel, Advocate Maqset Saleem, stated that they were withdrawing it for now, but reserved the right to challenge the amendment again if not satisfied with future changes.
Justice Chaudhry Iqbal ruled the petition disposed of as withdrawn, allowing the petitioner to file a fresh case later if necessary.
The Prime Minister, National Assembly Speaker, and Ministry of Law were made respondents in the petition, which had argued that transferring Supreme Court powers to a Federal Constitutional Court and granting lifetime immunity to the Chief of Defence Staff violated the spirit of the Constitution and should therefore be declared unconstitutional and void.
