ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Joint session of the standing committees on law and justice of both houses of Parliament started on Sunday to further discuss the proposed bill for the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The bill for Constitution (Twenty-Seventh Amendment) Act, 2025 was tabled before the Senate on Saturday hours after it was approved by the federal cabinet, triggering strong protests from the opposition.

The meeting is being co-chaired by Senator Farooq H. Naek and Mahmood Bashir Virk. Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan is also in attendance, while Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik is participating via Zoom link.

Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar is also attending the meeting. He has invited all political parties to participate in the joint committee’s session.

Meanwhile, the JUI-F (Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam) has boycotted the joint committee on law and justice, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded that a committee comprising the entire House be formed to discuss the amendment.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Law and Justice, Senator Farooq H. Naek, said that the proposals not discussed yesterday will be reviewed today. The meeting will also deliberate on issues such as judges’ transfers, Article 243 concerning joint command, and other clauses. Opinions will be taken on all clauses before final decisions are made.

Farooq Naek expressed the hope that the discussion will be completed today. Every party has the right to present its proposals, and it will become clear today what the majority of members decide.

He stated that the proposals from the MQM and the PML-N will also be reviewed before a final decision is made. The decision will be based on the majority opinion and then sent to the House. The aim is to complete the process by 5 pm, he added.

Earlier, Farooq Naek had informed that the committee had already deliberated on 80 percent of the proposals.
