Former PTI leaders meet Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Lahore, agree to launch ‘Release Imran Khan’ movement and plan political outreach to reduce tensions

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The behind-the-scenes details of a meeting between senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi and several former PTI figures at a hospital have come to light.

Party insiders revealed that the old PTI leadership has agreed to launch a movement titled ‘Release Imran Khan’, aimed at securing the release of the party’s founder.

According to sources, prominent figures expected to be part of the campaign include Fawad Chaudhry, Imran Ismail, Ali Zaidi, Mahmood Moulvi, Sibtain Khan and others. The former leadership reportedly made significant decisions regarding efforts for Imran Khan’s release, including initiating contact with the establishment and meeting senior leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz).

Sources further disclosed that both sides agreed on reducing political tensions across the country. The former PTI leaders also plan to meet Imran Khan himself and are working actively for the release of Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

The meeting participants, according to insiders, attempted to persuade Qureshi to play a role in resolving political matters through dialogue and to help bring down the country’s heated political climate. Discussions were also held on how Qureshi could act as a bridge to normalise political discourse and restore stability.

Party sources stated that the former PTI leaders believe the current PTI leadership lacks the capacity to secure Imran Khan’s release. During the meeting, the group also met former senator Ejaz Chaudhry, ex-provincial minister Mian Mahmood ur Rashid, and former Punjab governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema, with the country’s political situation high on the agenda.

It was further decided that former PTI members would reach out to government ministers. A three-member delegation, led by Fawad Chaudhry, is also set to meet Maulana Fazlur Rehman to discuss ways to ease political tensions.

Speaking to the media, Fawad Chaudhry confirmed that meetings had already taken place with Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Ejaz Chaudhry, and other PTI leaders. He added that efforts to secure the release of political prisoners had been endorsed by the PTI leadership.
