Sutlej swells after India releases more water

Rescue operations underway with the help of helicopters and boats

KASUR (Dunya News) - Hundreds of villages and settlements were submerged after India released water into Sutlej River on Monday, prompting the authorities concerned to issue a red alert.

After India released water, the flow of water at the Ganda Singhwala head started increasing. Several villages were submerged after 327,000 cusecs of water passed through the canal. The Chenab River wreaked havoc in Jalalpur Pirwala tehsil of Multan. More than 100 settlements were submerged in floodwater. Rescue operations were ongoing using helicopters and boats.

Thousands of people were displaced from the affected areas, floodwaters reached the city's embankment, a red alert was issued. Vehari bridge embankment was breached to save the city. The next 12 hours were declared extremely important, announcements were made in mosques to evacuate the urban area immediately.

Over 35 villages in Liaquatpur were also submerged due to the overflowing Chenab River. Heavy rains occurred in Jalalpur Pirwala, further increasing the difficulties of the flood victims. Flood situation continued in Arifwala Sutlej River.
