Imran Khan's nephew remanded in Jinnah House attack case

Judge denies prosecution plea for further custody extension

LAHORE (Dunya News) – An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Saturday sent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan’s nephew, Shahrez Khan, to jail on judicial remand in the high-profile Jinnah House attack case connected to the May 9 riots.

The court, presided over by Judge Manzer Ali Gill, dismissed the police’s request for an extension in physical remand after Shahrez was produced in court at the end of his eight-day custody. Instead, the judge ordered that the accused be sent to jail on judicial remand.

Shahrez, son of Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, was arrested on 21 August in connection with the Jinnah House incident. His brother, Shershah, is also facing charges in the same case, marking both siblings’ entanglement in one of the most significant post-May 9 investigations.

May 9 riots

The May 9 unrest erupted nationwide in 2023 following the arrest of PTI’s founder in a corruption case. Demonstrations escalated into violent attacks on state and military installations, with the ransacking of Lahore’s Jinnah House emerging as one of the most widely reported incidents.

During Saturday’s hearing, police investigators urged the court for an extension in physical custody to continue their inquiry against Shahrez. However, Judge Gill declined the request and directed that he be moved to jail under judicial remand.

Aleema Khan, while addressing the media outside the ATC during an earlier hearing, said that her son had been taken into custody soon after Imran Khan secured bail in multiple cases. Both of her sons, Shershah and Shahrez, now face charges of participating in anti-state activity and involvement in the May 9 violence.
