ATC extends remand of Saeed Ghani's brother in assault case

Farhan Ghani to remain in police custody till Aug 30 as court demands investigation progress

KARACHI (Dunya News) - An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday extended the physical remand of Chanesar Town Chairman Farhan Ghani and five others for three more days in connection with an alleged assault on a government employee.

Ghani, the younger brother of Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, was produced before the court along with other accused. The court directed police to present them again on August 30 and submit a progress report on the investigation.

The case was filed at Ferozabad Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act and other legal provisions, based on a complaint by Hafiz Sohail, a government official. Sohail alleged he was attacked on August 22 while supervising fibre cable installation near Sharae Faisal.

During Thursday’s hearing, Advocate Waqar Abbasi submitted power of attorney on behalf of the accused, while the prosecution sought an extension in remand. The judge expressed frustration over the slow pace of the investigation, stating: “What will you do with more remand? So far, you have done nothing.” The court also criticised the absence of witness testimony and overall lack of progress.

Previously, on August 26, Ghani had been remanded to police custody until August 28. According to the FIR, Ghani and his associates face charges including attempted murder and terrorism. Ghani has denied all allegations, stating he merely questioned the workers about digging without a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and did not engage in any assault. The investigation continues.
