NEW YORK (Dunya News) – Pakistan has described the deliberate targeting of trans-national infrastructure - whether energy pipelines, telecommunication cables or data networks as an illegal act that constitutes a threat to global stability and hinders the smooth functioning of global markets.
Speaking at the United Nations Security Council meeting held under the agenda item Threats to International Peace and Security, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, voiced Pakistan's serious concern over the deliberate sabotage of the Nord Stream offshore natural gas pipelines in September 2022.
"An attack on these facilities and critical infrastructure undermines commercial operation of such entities and also creates a dangerous precedent - that must be effectively addressed," he said.
Ambassador Jadoon described the attack as "an alarming and reprehensible act," stressing that premeditated attacks against critical civilian and energy infrastructure, whether by state or non-state actors, threaten global stability and undermine international law.
Highlighting the interconnectedness of today's world, he warned that deliberate targeting of transnational infrastructure such as pipelines, telecommunication cables, or data networks poses grave risks to the smooth functioning of global markets and creates dangerous precedents that must be firmly addressed.
The Pakistan deputy UN ambassador outlined three key points and said that the safety and security of critical civilian and energy infrastructure, particularly of transnational nature, must never be jeopardized during hostilities. He called for strict enforcement of international law and stronger cooperative frameworks to prevent such attacks.
Ambassador Usman Jadoon said that all deliberate attacks must be met with accountability by bringing perpetrators to justice. He noted Germany's ongoing national investigations and the reported arrest of one suspect, emphasizing the importance of transparent and credible processes.
Recognizing the complexities involved, Ambassador Jadoon underscored that investigations must be concluded to the satisfaction of all concerned parties, in a manner that establishes facts, addresses legitimate concerns, and upholds the principle of scrutiny and accountability.
"Cooperation between all concerned parties is essential for credible investigations and effective follow-up," Ambassador Jadoon stressed.
He reiterated a call for the identification and prosecution of those responsible for the Nord Stream attack, emphasizing that accountability is vital to deter future attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure.
