SIALKOT – Torrential rains in Sialkot on Tuesday shattered an 11-year record, leaving several parts of the city under water and triggering flood fears.
According to the deputy commissioner, more than 335 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the city. Low-lying areas including Rang Pura, Shahab Pura, Dara Arain, Allama Iqbal Chowk, and Prem Nagar were badly hit, with rainwater piling up in streets and neighborhoods.
The Meteorological Department warned that heavy showers may continue for another two to four hours. Overflow from Nullah Dek has already flooded nearby villages, forcing residents to move to safer places. Rescue teams are on the ground, shifting people out of harm’s way.
Punjab Minister for Housing and Urban Development Bilal Yasin rushed to Sialkot on an emergency visit to oversee relief and rescue operations. He is set to receive briefings from the deputy commissioner, WASA, PDMA, Rescue 1122, and other officials.
The minister will also review preparations of all departments to deal with any untoward situation, following the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
SCHOOLS CLOSED
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Saba Asghar Ali declared a local holiday due to the emergency situation in the district and urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
The deputy commissioner also invoked Section 144 and barred citizens from going near rivers or streams.
Education institutions in Kot Momin have also been closed due to the flood situation. The tehsil administration made the decision to ensure children's safety. According to officials, educational activities will remain suspended today due to the flood risk.
