ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared three residents of Gilgit-Baltistan as national heroes after their timely action saved around 300 lives.
Each of the men was awarded a prize of Rs 2.5 million along with certificates of appreciation.
The three men – Wasit Khan, Ansar, and Muhammad Khan – met the Prime Minister following their life-saving intervention in Ghizer district. The trio, who work as shepherds, spotted signs of a glacial lake outburst flood while tending livestock on elevated ground. Their swift warning to villagers enabled the evacuation of three nearby settlements, preventing potential tragedy.

The government had announced cash rewards of Rs 2.5 million each for the three men. In addition, Prime Minister Sharif committed to visiting Gilgit-Baltistan in the coming days. He also pledged to transform the affected village into a model settlement, equipped with modern facilities and infrastructure improvements.
Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister said that by saving lives, the three men had set an example of selfless service. He added that individuals such as them are a source of inspiration and are seen as saviours for the entire nation.
