Karachi officially shuts down after monsoon rain wreaks havoc

Public holiday declared on August 20 as city grapples with urban flooding, school closures, outages

KARACHI (Web Desk) - Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has declared a public holiday in Karachi on August 20 (Wednesday), following record monsoon rains that battered the city.

He also urged citizens to stay indoors as more rainfall is expected.

The Sindh government announced on Tuesday evening that all public and private schools across Karachi will remain closed tomorrow (Wednesday) following heavy monsoon rains that inundated large parts of the city and disrupted civic life.

The decision was taken as a precautionary measure after torrential downpours triggered urban flooding in several neighbourhoods, paralysed traffic on major roads and caused prolonged power outages. Education officials said the closure is aimed at ensuring the safety of students, teachers and staff while drainage and relief operations continue.

The announcement came shortly after Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed civic and rescue authorities to remain on high alert during the ongoing spell of heavy showers. He instructed district administrations and local bodies to expedite drainage work, while urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
