PCB faces criticism over mentor salaries despite role termination

The project was scrapped, rendering the mentor roles redundant.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Despite abolishing the mentor positions, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) continues to pay hefty salaries to four former cricketers.

Saqlain Mushtaq, and Waqar Younis have received termination letters and are serving their notice period, while Sarfaraz Ahmed and Misbah-ul-Haq remain on the payroll without new assignments.

Last year, PCB appointed Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, and Saqlain Mushtaq as mentors for the Champions Cup project, each receiving Rs. 5 million monthly. However, the project was later scrapped, rendering the mentor roles redundant. Malik had already resigned, but the remaining four continue to draw salaries.

According to sources, Mushtaq and Younis will be paid four months’ salary—around Rs. 20 million—as per their contracts, during which PCB can still assign them duties. Sarfaraz and Misbah’s services have been retained permanently, though they have not been given new roles yet, and a reduction in their monthly pay is under consideration.

Officials had initially hoped the mentors would resign voluntarily, but none stepped down since the contract guaranteed a sizeable payout. Consequently, PCB terminated two while retaining the other two under revised terms.
