Arabeen travel: MWM ends protest march after reaching agreement with govt

Talal said decision to ban road travel for pilgrims to Iran, Iraq was made due to security reason

KARACHI (Dunya News) – The Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) has announced ending the protest march after it reached a seven-point agreement with government.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, while speaking to the media, said that the government made a difficult decision of banning road travel for pilgrims to Iran and Iraq due to security reasons.

He said the Iraqi government will be asked to extend the visas by up to 60 days. Those who have already received Iraqi visas will be provided discounted tickets by the government, and students present at the border will be allowed to enter Iran without any obstruction, Chaudhry added.

Governor of Sindh Kamran Tessori expressed gratitude to the MWM leadership for calling back the caravan.

He said the government did not want pilgrims to travel through areas already facing security issues.

Tessori further said that the pilgrims have demanded discounted air travel.

MWM leader Allama Ahmad Iqbal Rizvi stated that the government handled the matter positively, and they now announce the end of the march. He said Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori has been made the guarantor to ensure the demands are fulfilled.

Last month, Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi had announced that pilgrims (Zaireen) will not be permitted to travel to Iraq and Iran by road this year. The decision, taken after thorough consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Balochistan Government, and key security agencies, comes in response to escalating regional security threats along land routes.

Naqvi, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), had emphasized that the measure has been taken solely to protect citizens from potential risks during their religious journey.
