LAHORE (Dunya News) – In a groundbreaking initiative under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s “Suthra Punjab – Waste to Value Project,” Punjab has successfully produced biogas from animal waste for the first time.
According to a Punjab government spokesperson, biodegradable animal waste collected from Lahore’s Lakhodair area was used to generate biogas. The trial yielded 20,000 to 25,000 kilograms of gas from 1,000 metric tons of sacrificial animal offal.
The spokesperson revealed that the project, launched with minimal investment, is expected to generate revenue of Rs6 to 7 million. With the success of this pilot project, plans are underway for a 50-megawatt waste-to-energy plant capable of converting 3,000 tons of waste into electricity daily. Additionally, the Lakhodair landfill gas project is estimated to earn $2.5 million over the next decade.
The model recycling park is projected to bring in Rs190 million annually, while the restoration of the Lakhodair disposal site is expected to yield 275,000 tons of carbon credits and revenue of $4.2 million.
A Waste-to-Value Incubation Centre will also be established to support youth with seed funding, technical assistance, and research opportunities. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif appreciated the efforts of LWMC in executing the initiative.
