Rawalpindi 'honour killing' case: Second husband surrenders, seeks police protection

Says he arranged Rs30,000 to 40,000 to help the woman approach the court and secure protection.

RAWALPINDI (Web Desk) – A suspected honour killing case in Rawalpindi’s Pirwadhai area has taken a dramatic turn after the deceased woman’s second husband voluntarily surrendered to police late Saturday night, officials confirmed.

The case revolves around the mysterious death of a 19-year-old woman, reportedly killed in the name of so-called honour following a jirga verdict, and secretly buried in a local graveyard.

According to the FIR registered by her first husband, Zia-ur-Rehman, on July 21, the woman had allegedly left home on July 11, taking along gold jewellery, Rs150,000 in cash, and personal belongings He later learned that she had married another man, Usman, despite already being legally wed to him.

The woman is believed to have been murdered on July 16, with her burial taking place the following day in secrecy.

However, in a surprising development, her second husband, Usman—originally from Chehla Bandi, Muzaffarabad—surrendered to police in Rawalpindi’s Pirwadhai area, expressing concerns over being falsely implicated.

According to police, Usman works at a local workshop near the Pirwadhai bus stand. He and the woman reportedly got married on July 12 in Muzaffarabad, as confirmed by their Nikahnama.

Prior to her murder, the woman had also recorded a statement before a judicial magistrate, claiming she married Usman of her own free will and requested court protection. In her court statement, she said her father had passed away, her mother had remarried, and her first husband had verbally divorced her—details which challenged the FIR’s claims. Meanwhile, Usman’s father, Muhammad Ilyas, released a video statement saying his family lives a humble life as labourers.

He said he arranged Rs30,000 to 40,000 to help the woman approach the court and secure protection.

“When she asked for protection, I arranged the money and took her to court. We solemnised the marriage lawfully and submitted all statements in court,” Ilyas stated.

However, just four days after the marriage, armed men allegedly stormed their home and issued death threats to the family. Fearing for their safety, the family reluctantly handed the woman back to her relatives. Tragically, they later learned that she had been killed.

Out of fear that his son Usman might be falsely framed for the murder, Ilyas decided to voluntarily hand him over to police custody.

He has now appealed to the authorities for immediate protection for his family, citing ongoing threats to their lives following the incident.
