ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Three Pakistani climbers have successfully reached the summit of Gasherbrum-I (8,080m), the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) announced on Wednesday.
Among them, Abid Baig of Hunza completed a solo ascent of the world’s 11th highest peak on 20 July, without the use of supplementary oxygen or Sherpa support. Executed in pure alpine style, his climb stands as a rare and commendable feat in the realm of modern high-altitude mountaineering.
Solo alpine ascent
“Climbing an 8,000er solo and without oxygen is an extraordinary display of endurance and mountain spirit,” said Karrar Haidri, Vice President of the ACP.
Meanwhile, Mehboob Ali and Abbas Ali from Arandu village in Shigar Valley reached the summit as part of the Elite Exped team led by renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Dai.
The ascent party was joined on the climb by Sheikha Asma Al Thani, a member of Qatar’s royal family.
Pakistan’s mountaineering pride
“This is a proud moment for Pakistan,” Haidri added. “Climbers from both the north and south of the Karakoram have proven their world-class skill, resilience and determination.”
All climbers were reported safe and had commenced their descent to Base Camp at the time of reporting.
