LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Punjab government has greenlit a major funding package for the revival and restoration of Lahore’s historic Walled City, approving over Rs29.24 billion for multiple development projects during the 9th meeting of the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP).
A hefty chunk of the funding – Rs6.92 billion – will go toward upgrading underground electricity and telecom infrastructure within the Walled City. Another Rs3.09 billion has been allocated for the repair and restoration of building facades, bringing life back to historic streets.
The government has also earmarked Rs5.10 billion for the rehabilitation of havelis, monuments, and recreational sites, all part of a broader effort to breathe new life into Lahore’s cultural heart.
To improve basic amenities in the Walled City, the government approved Rs5.65 billion for sewerage, drainage, water supply, and street restoration.
In addition to the Walled City initiatives, the PDWP approved Rs1.33 billion for setting up a data center, and Rs200 million for a feasibility study of a mass transit system in Sargodha, showing the government’s commitment to planning ahead for smart urban growth.
The meeting was chaired by Chairman Planning & Development Board Dr. Naeem Rauf, with Secretary P&D Rafiqat Ali, Chief Economist Masood Anwar, and board members from various sectors in attendance.
The PDWP also gave the green light to Rs6.92 billion for the CM Punjab School Meal Program, aimed at improving child nutrition and school attendance across the province.
These approvals reflect the Punjab government's focus on restoring heritage, boosting urban infrastructure, and investing in public welfare, ensuring that no stone is left unturned in the province’s development journey.
