LAHORE (Dunya News) - Two Mayo Hospital patients died and 14 developed severe health complications, three of them being on ventilators, after a reaction to an injection given to them for the treatment of their lung infections at Chest Ward of the hospital, Dunya News reported here on Sunday.
Those who died from the injection have been identified as Perveen Bibi and Dolat Khan.
Mayo Hospital CEO Professor Haroon Hamid said the use of the injection had been halted immediately, adding a committee had been formed to investigate the matter.
The CEO said the ailing patients were being given special care, with senior doctors taking care of them.
Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique confirmed the incident, saying a committee has been formed to ascertain the cause of the deaths. He said those responsible for the deaths and health complications of the patients would be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the hospital administration says the antibiotic used in the injection was not expired but the staff who administered it might have mixed water in wrong proportion. It says investigation is being conducted to verify the facts.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has taken notice of the incident and sought a report from the health authorities. She expressed grief over the loss of lives.
