SRINAGAR (Dunya News) - The newly-elected Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir passed a resolution on Nov 6, calling for the restoration of the region’s constitutional rights and statehood.
The resolution, which received overwhelming support through a voice vote, was introduced by National Conference leader and Deputy Chief Minister Surender Singh Choudhary.
It appealed to the Indian government to engage in talks for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 and its constitutional guarantees.
The resolution emphasised that efforts for restoration should respect the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir while maintaining national unity.
Despite opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Radhar presented the resolution for voting, and it was passed with a majority. Following the vote, the Speaker briefly adjourned the session.
BJP members were the only ones to oppose the resolution, arguing that it was not part of day's agenda. The BJP lawmakers raised slogans in protest during the proceedings.
This development came nearly five years after the Indian government’s controversial decision in August 2019 to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, a move that was later upheld by the Supreme Court of India. However, the court also ordered that state elections be held in the region.
