Omar Ayub criticises govt for 'use of force' to pass six bills in National Assembly

He said the opposition was gagged [for passing the bills] yesterday

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The National Assembly session on Tuesday was adjourned indefinitely after the address of Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan who criticised the treasury for passing bills “through use of force”.

He said the opposition was gaged [for passing the bills] yesterday. These bills should have been discussed in the Standing Committee, Omar added.

He called the way the six bills were passed a day ago a “shameful incident” and branded the ruling coalition a “government of thieves”.

Deputy Speaker Mir Ghulam Mustafa Shah ordered removing his remarks from the record.

Following his remarks, the assembly’s YouTube channel livestream was stopped. Earlier, the livestream on PTV Parliament’s YouTube channel was also stopped as soon as Omar Ayub began his speech.

Referring to May 9 incidents, the opposition leader said “we will also show students of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the vandalism done by the federal forces in KP House” like the Jinnah House in Lahore was shown to students.

“We will show our youth how a province was invaded,” he continued.

The opposition leader said the government used force yesterday and the house was full. But today, it the house was empty.

He criticised extension in the tenure of service granted to the armed forces chiefs after passage of bills saying that careers of many officers would end. The mic of opposition leader was switched off during his speech.

The deputy speaker ordered that the mic be turned on, but the livestream was again cut off as soon as he started speaking.

He, however, continued and called the forces as that of Hulegu Khan (Halaku Khan). The nation was facing inflation, but the government was passing bills. He termed the government mafia who was afraid of a person who was jailed.

Omar Ayub said that the GDP was 6 percent during the PTI rule. He dared the ruling party to go out and ask people about the inflation. He offered the parliamentarians to ask the security guard standing next to you if the inflation has decreased.

He said Sardar Akhtar Mengal resigned from this house but no eyebrow was raised.

Later, the livestream resumed when MNA Aurangzeb Khichi, one of the PTI-backed lawmakers who voted in favour of the 26th Amendment, stood up to speak.

As Khichi stood up, the opposition members started chanting lota (turncoat). He boasted that he did not receive a single rupee [as bribe to vote for the amendment].

He acknowledged that the PTI was a big party and claimed that he thwarted the attempt to create a “forward block” in the party.

The deputy speaker adjourned the session indefinitely after his speech.
