ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The ruling coalition didn’t move the constitutional amendment in the Senate on Friday and the session was adjourned till tomorrow.
Earlier, it was being expected that the government would move the amendment in the upper house on Friday.
Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani suggested to adjourn the session for an hour as he said that the cabinet meeting was in progress.
Senator Irfan Siddiqui of PML-N said that the government wanted to pass the amendment with consensus of all the parties.
He added that there is nothing in the proposed amendment that violates the fundamental rights.
Earlier, talking to media, Irfan Siddiqui said the draft was approved by all the parties, including the JUI-F and the PTI.
He said it was a major development and now the draft would be presented before the cabinet.
The draft of constitutional amendment that was passed by the special committee of parliament appeared on Friday.
There are 26 amendments in the approved draft that would be brought in the parliament.
The formation of constitutional bench has been proposed in the new draft.
The draft said that the judicial commission would decide the number of constitutional benches and judges.
The suo motu powers would rest with the constitutional benches according to the proposed amendment in Article 184.
