Punjab govt requests military assistance to ensure law and order

The armed forces will have the powers to detain individuals in the absence of police.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Punjab government has called in the military to maintain peace and order in the province.

A notification regarding the deployment of armed forces has been issued, which will be implemented under Article 245 of the Constitution.

The notification requesting the services of the Pakistan Army has been sent to the General Headquarters (GHQ), and copies have also been distributed to all Corps Headquarters in Punjab.

According to the notification, the decision to call in the military was made during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee for Law and Order. The armed forces will have the authority to take action in response to information about attacks from armed groups and will be empowered to deal strictly with those spreading unrest.

The notification further stated that under the rules, the armed forces will have the powers outlined in Section 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, allowing them to detain individuals to prevent crimes in the absence of police.
