(Dunya News) – Pakistani twins who were joined at the head have been successfully separated with the help of a team of medical professionals-led by Kashmiri-British neurosurgeon Owase Jeelani in Turkiye.
11-month-old Mirha and Minal underwent a couple operations lasting around 14 hours at Bilkent City Hospital. in the Turkish capital city of Ankara.
The twin girls were taken to Turkiye in May this year after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan assured to help the family, who was unable to get the suitable treatment in Pakistan.
President Erdogan was contacted by the London-based pediatric neurosurgeon Jeelani for assistance in the case.
The separation was done in two stages under the supervision of the surgical team led by Dr. Jeelani, along with Turkish physicians Dr. Harun Demirci and Dr. Hasan Murat Ergani.
The final 14-hour surgery was conducted on July 19, successfully separating the twins.
The successful surgery demonstrates the brotherly relations between the two Islamic countries besides sending a message globally that nations should prioritise collaboration in goodwill efforts to overcome challenges.
Meanwhile, Pakistani family has expressed gratitude to President Erdogan and medical team and everyone involved in the successful treatment of their twin girls.
The family had contacted Jeelani after they were told in Pakistan that the treatment could not be done due to sensitivity.
However, Jeelani, after reviewing the reports, told the parents that it was possible to separate the conjoined twins.
