227th Urs of Syed Waris Shah begins in Jandiala Sher Khan

Syed Waris Shah was known as the Shakespeare of Punjabi language.

SHEIKHUPURA (Dunya News) – The 227th Urs of eminent sufi poet Syed Waris Shah started on Monday in Jandiala Sher Khan, a village near Sheikhupura. People from close and far-off areas are attending the three-day celebrations of the Urs.

Waris Shah, best known for his seminal work Heer Ranjha, was known as the Shakespeare of Punjabi language. His famous folk tale ‘Heer Ranjha’ is said to be the encyclopedia of Punjab.

The celebrations started with the 'ghussal' ceremony of the shrine with rose water. The district administration along with police made strict security arrangements.

A 'Heer reciting' competition and other programmes are part of the three-day Urs celebrations. The Urs of Waris Shah is the true depiction of Punjabi culture and tradition where people witness all colors and aspects of Punjab.
