Parliament is supreme over SC verdicts, says law minister

only the assembly elected by the people has the right to enact legislation

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has said the parliament holds supreme legislative power and is above the verdicts of Supreme Court.

Addressing a press conference, he said only the assembly elected by the people has the right to enact legislation.

Responding to a question, Tarar said “law is very clear that an independent candidate has to join a political party within 3 days therefore there are some confusions which will be cleared in a revision appeal.”

Tarar maintained that the process of joining a party of an independent candidate was irreversible while reiterating that the legislation of the parliament was supreme than the decisions of the Supreme Court.

He recalled the verdict of the Peshawar High Court in which it upheld the decision of the Election Commission with a majority of five zero.

Responding to a query, the federal minister said PTI was not a party in cases in ECP, Peshawar High Court or Supreme Court while loyalty of an independent candidate could not be changed after joining a party.

He maintained that the detailed decision did not explain how the seats would be distributed while adding it was really disturbing to witness harsh words use for judges who wrote dissenting note.
