Speaker summons NA session on Feb 29 after president returns summary

Speaker mandated to convene session on 21st day following conduct of elections

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The speaker has summoned a session of the National Assembly on Feb 29, Thursday, in response to the president's refusal to convene the inaugural session.

According to details, NA Speaker Raja Parvez Ashraf will convene the session at 10am on Thursday, in accordance with the Clause 2 of Article 91 of the Constitution.

During this session, newly elected MNAs will take their oaths.

Sources said that the speaker made this decision after consulting constitutional experts and senior staff at the NA Secretariat regarding the situation arising from the president's refusal to sign the summary forwarded by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs to convene the session of the newly elected Assembly.

President Alvi had reportedly returned the summary.

Sources also said that the president maintained the stance that the lower house of parliament would remain incomplete until all parties were assigned reserved seats.

According to Article 91 of the Constitution, if the president does not sign the summary for convening a session, the speaker of the National Assembly is mandated to convene a session on the 21st day following the elections.

In accordance with this, the speaker can convene the session on Feb 29, following the general elections held on Feb 8.
