No political vendetta - Maryam spells out vision for Punjab development

She delivered her maiden speech in Punjab Assembly after being elected CM

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Punjab Chief Minister-elect Maryam Nawaz says she doesn't want revenge or political vendetta for anyone including her opponents. 

She was delivering her maiden speech in the Punjab Assembly on Monday after being elected the chief minister of the largest province.  

Earlier, Maryam secured 220 votes to become leader of the house against Sunni Ittehad Council’s Rana Aftab Khan who didn’t participate in the election process as the party lawmakers staged walkout from the house. 

“The doors of my chamber and office will remain open for my party, allies and for the opposition as well. I am their sister and daughter too,” said Maryam Nawaz.

She was all praise for her father Nawaz Sharif and uncle Shehbaz Sharif for nominating her for the coveted office. 

Earlier, having photograph of her mother, the late Kulsoom Nawaz, in front of her dais, she moved to the chair of leader of the house amid the roaring slogans of ‘Sher, Sher’. 

Addressing the opposition, the CM-elect said the lawmakers should have become the part of the political and democratic process.

“We also faced really tough time but remained part of the process,” said Maryam, while reminiscing her time spent in prison. 

Speaking on the floor of the house, Maryam said she would be the CM of all the lawmakers across the divide. 

“I am the chief minister of over 125 million people. I’ll be available for my allies and opposition members for the issues of their constituencies,” she said.

She added that a huge responsibility was on her shoulder keeping in view that her father and uncle performed exceptionally well while sitting in the chair now held by her.

“Nawaz Sharif started his political journey from here and became prime minister three times and made this country an atomic power,” Maryam said.

He guided me throughout to prepare the roadmap for the development of Punjab, she added.

She also recalled her uncle and party president Shehbaz Sharif who remained the CM three times. “Shehbaz Sharif is still remembered as the ‘Punjab speed’ and I’ll follow his policies to serve the people of province,” said Maryam.

The newly-elected CM extensively talked about her plans and the roadmap for Punjab which includes better health, education and infrastructure.

“We’ll leave a better Punjab after five years,” pledged Maryam.
