President of Pakistan will be elected on March 9

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The President of Pakistan will be elected on March 9. The Election Commission will issue the schedule on Saturday (today).

Dr Arif Alvi remained in office even after the completion of his five-year term because the electoral college required to choose the president was absent. There were caretaker setups in the centre and the provinces after the term of the last government expired.

Electoral College for President

The president is elected by both the Senate and the National Assembly — and the four provincial assemblies.

Now, after the February 8 general elections, the electoral college is complete as almost all the provinces have summoned sessions.

Sources reveal that Asif Ali Zardari will be the presidential candidate of the coalition after the agreement between two major parties PPP and PML-N. It was agreed to place Mr Zardari as President and Shehbaz Sharif as the PM.

Though Dr Alvi completed his term, critics always bugged him saying his Presidency was an “ordinance factory” as he promulgated dozens of ordinances.

Moreover, the Supreme Court also voided his dissolution of the national assembly on the advice of the then Prime Minister.
