(Web Desk) - TikTok is set to challenge YouTube by introducing long-form videos, a move that is expected to benefit creators and businesses on the platform.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra has revealed that TikTok is testing this feature in the beta versions of both iOS and Android, with a global rollout expected soon.
Originally gaining popularity for its short-form video format, TikTok has gradually increased its maximum video length over time. The platform started with a 15-second limit, then extended it to 1 minute, 3 minutes, and most recently, 10 minutes.
In October of the previous year, TikTok began testing a 15-minute video upload limit.
The introduction of longer-form videos is anticipated to be advantageous for creators and businesses, eliminating the need to break content into shorter videos for posting.
From a business perspective, this move could enhance TikTok's monetization and revenue-sharing potential. Longer videos enable creators to include more pre and mid-roll ads, with the resulting revenue being directly shared with the content creators.
However, there is speculation that this move may not be as well-received, given that users are accustomed to TikTok's short-form content, which has been criticized for its brief duration.
The platform, owned by a Chinese company, has dominated other social media platforms in terms of popularity, owing much of its success to its algorithm.
TikTok revolutionized the social media landscape with the introduction of short-form videos, a trend that has been widely embraced worldwide.
In response, competitors such as YouTube introduced Shorts, while Instagram and Facebook launched Reels to compete in the short-form video space.
