TV series to detail life of Denmark's former queen Margrethe

The queen recently abdicated the Danish throne

(Web Desk) - Denmark's Queen Margrethe recently surprised the world with her abdication in favor of her son, the new King Frederik — and now, a week later, it has been announced that a TV series centered on her life story is currently in development.

Similar to the concept behind Netflix's hit The Crown, which details the life of Britain's Queen Elizabeth, the new series Af Guds nåde (‘By the grace of God’) is being developed by Borgen maker Sam Productions and Danish broadcaster TV2.

According to The Guardian, it will be set at Amalienborg palace, the royals’ official residence in Copenhagen, and will use Margrethe’s birth in 1940 as a starting point.

Producers of the show told the outlet that it will "embrace the royal family for better or worse" and tell the story of "a girl and her family."

The script will be reportedly written from the perspective of members of the royal family as well as royal court employees.

Margrethe's family has been under scrutiny of late for various dramas.

Her abdication earlier this month made her the first Danish monarch to voluntarily step down from the throne in nearly 900 years.

Son Frederik's subsequent installation comes months after it was speculated he was having an affair with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova. (Casanova issued a statement on Instagram calling the report "totally false" and "absolutely untrue.")

Frederik's promotion also comes a year after his brother Joachim's four children were stripped of their royal titles on Jan. 1, 2023, sparking a rumored feud in the family.

Following Margrethe's retirement, the country now has two queens, with Margrethe keeping her title and Frederik’s wife becoming Queen Mary. Their 18-year-old son, Christian, will now become crown prince and the heir to their throne.

Af Guds nåde has reportedly been in development over the past 18 months. It's expected to be released next year, but there's no word on international distribution yet.
