NEW YORK (Web Desk) - If you leave anything next to your outdoor bins, waste collectors may reasonably assume it is rubbish to be taken away. However, children don t always understand this risk and the adults supervising them need to step in.

In an unfortunate turn of events, one child s scooter was thrown away with the rubbish for this very same reason. The little boy had left his scooter in his neighbour s garden in the exact spot where the resident leaves his waste on bin day.

However, the adult did not return the toy to its proper home, thinking he was respecting his neighbour s wishes by doing so.

Instead, he placed his bins in front of the scooter, not thinking it would be taken away. Later in the day, he then watched on in shock as the waste collectors removed everything from his yard, scooter included.

When he told the child s dad, the parent then reacted as if the homeowner was the one in the wrong, even though he d previously the parent to collect the toy.

An argument ensued - one that ended up with the worker paying the dad - much to the shock of social media users.

However, the resident stands by his decision to help buy the child a new toy.

"On several occasions, their kids left things in our yard during nighttime we ve politely moved them back to their yard. Never made a fuss about it," wrote. "Thursday night, our neighbor yelled at us and was upset we moved things from our yard to theirs. I told them they need to keep their toys in their yard. He said to leave them and he’ll get them in the morning."

The post continued: "Well yesterday trash day. When I took the trash cans to the side of the road, the scooter was still in our trash can spot. I moved the scooter behind the trash cans because I wanted to honor the neighbor’s request.

"Also, I assumed the trash collectors would leave it alone. I was in a work meeting that I was hosting (I work from home). I watched from the window as the trash collectors not only took the trash from the cans, but hurled the scooter into the trash."

He then quickly let the boy s dad know, as soon as his meeting finished. However, his attempt to help was not well received as his neighbour claimed he should have told the parent sooner. "I told him I’m not responsible for how their kids treat their things. I offered 50 dollars (£40).

In an update to the post, the author added he has since spoken to the child s mum, who returned the money and said her son will complete chores to earn a new scooter.

"She thanked me for giving the money, but she believes her husband made me guilty in giving him the money. She knew my intention, but it wasn’t teaching her son the right lesson," his post explained.

He concluded by saying he still stands by his choice as he didn t want the boy to go without, and he said he is glad to see  a good end to what’s been annoying behavior .

In response, some commenters criticised the resident for paying, when they did not think he was obliged to, but many were glad to learn his money had been returned.
