What was the cape that Lionel Messi wore to lift the World Cup?
LUSAIL (Web Desk) – Thirty-six years have passed since Argentina were last crowned world champions and at the Lusail Stadium, in dramatic fashion, Messi and the Albiceleste lifted their third trophy after a whirlwind of a final where both Messi and France striker Mbappé shared the limelight.
— FIFA World Cup (@FIFAWorldCup) December 18, 2022Just before lifting the trophy on the Lusail Stadium podium, Messi received a striking black and gold garment from the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The item of clothing is known as a ‘bisht’, a cape that is mainly worn by the Emir along with Qatari ministers and VIPs on Qatar’s National Day (which was on Sunday). The gesture was one of recognitions for Leo Messi who picked up the only major title he had yet to win.
The cape is also used by Qatari families for special and important occasions and it’s not uncommon for a father to put the garment on his son to celebrate marriage and only the Emir of Qatar wears it all the time. The ‘bisht’ garment is usually worn over the thoub, a kind of tunic that reaches down to the ankle and usually has long sleeves.
