Politicizing water issue subverts national interest: CM Buzdar
LAHORE (Dunya News) - Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has termed Sindh’s complaints on water scarcity as political point scoring and said that politicizing the issue is against the country’s national interest.
In a statement on Tuesday, he said that when crops were being sown in Sindh, it received a constant supply of water. Now that crops are being sown in Punjab, it is inappropriate for Sindh to raise objection.
The Punjab Chief Minister said that a joint committee has been proposed to resolve the issue. Punjab can discharge its share of water in any canal as per its requirement and water scarcity is a technical issue that can be addressed by forming joint teams of IRSA, Punjab and Sindh.
Usman Buzdar said that authentic gauges have been installed in the province to collect water data while the record of water data collection in Sindh is not authentic.
He said that Sindh had earlier agreed to install telemetry system but later refused. The Sindh government is misrepresenting the statistics on the water issue, while water is still being dumped downstream from Kotri into the sea due to its own mismanagement.
“How can water scarcity in Karachi be linked to Punjab? Punjab has always taken care of every province as the bigger brother”, said the CM.
He added that the Punjab government has sent a formal letter to IRSA to appoint inspectors for accurate reporting on water.
