PTA issues notices to Google, Wikipedia over sacrilegious content
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said Friday that it has been receiving complaints from citizens regarding misleading search results associated with “Present Khalifa of Islam” as well as unauthentic versions of Holy Quran uploaded on the web.
In a press release, PTA said that as the matter is of a very serious nature, it has approached Google Inc. with the directions to immediately remove the unlawful content through a notice issued under Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight & Safeguard) Rules 2020.
It said that complaints were also received regarding hosting blasphemous caricatures and dissemination of misleading, wrong, deceptive and deceitful information through articles published on Wikipedia.
After extensive communication on the matter, PTA served a notice to Wikipedia to remove the sacrilegious content to avoid any legal action.
PTA said that if the platforms fail to comply, it shall initiate further action under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA) and Rules 2020.
